Why is the #fatheringfrom campaign needed?

By encouraging fathers to include the hashtags of their locations, we hope to amplify the public reach of their photos and videos. Black fathers should be seen and recognized everywhere they are doing whatever it is they do! Because the presence of fathers in urban communities is a public good. While you are out and about your community, take a fathering pic so you can share your presence in your child's life not only with people who know to look for it but also with people who don’t. Hashtag your location: #yourcity, #yourneighborhood, #yourpark, #yourstreet, or wherever you and your child happen to be. Go from local to global in your reach in counteracting stereotypes about black fathers.

It is time to bring the actions and experiences of black fathers, which have often been marginalized and vilified, into full public glory grounded in context. Shining a public authentic light to fatherhood in black communities is restorative to the negative narrative of black fathers that have been imprinted onto our national subconscious. Shake that sucka loose! We know how important a father is to a child. But, we are just beginning to understand the ways that the community presence of black men with children benefits us all! #fatheringfrom is a campaign to support the organic social movement of black fathers and their families in reclaiming their narrative.
